Hmm, you could use a “mentionedUsers” array in the post entry and store the users IDs, then use populate to fill the usernames:

Posts.findOne({id: 12345}).populate(‘mentionedUsers’, ‘username’)

“View the rendered version of your post” button should be disabled when the post is empty. Also, button in the hub says “new post” and window says “new update”, terms should be consistent across the network.
